Species: TRIPHYLITE Locality: Chandlers Mill Mine, Newport, NH Specimen Size: 4 to 6 mm pale-blue triphylite crystals Field Collected: Unknown Catalog No.: TBC Notes: I purchased a golf ball sized Chandlers Mill specimen from Ted Johnson (Yankee Minerals) at the 2015 Springfield, MA show that contained numerous 1 to 6 mm triphylite crystals. Most were broken, but I thought I might find a few mostly complete ones if I broke up the specimen. The Chandlers Mill Mine is a world class occurrence for triphylite crystals. The largest ones can approach one inch in size and can sell for many hundreds of dollars. I paid $10 for this specimen. |

Species: CHALCANTHITE ? Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 4.3 cm specimen with close-up view sizes indicated in photos Field Collected: Dana Jewel Catalog No.: u1788 Notes: A gift from Dana Jewel, 2015. Carbon tape mounted grain EDS analyses of both the blue and blue-green minerals (4th and 5th photos) suggested a copper sulfate species on a mica substrate, (the source of the Si, Al, and K in the EDS plots). (The pulse counts for these analyses are quite low, but the best data I curently have.) Chalcanthite is likely the most common of the copper sulfates, but there about ten others. Phosphorous not detected, so not pseudomalachite. Bob Whitmore's book, The Pegmatite Mines Known as Palermo does not include any copper sulfate species, so this could be a new one for Palermo. As the red-brown staining is sometimes indicative of the presence of uranium minerals, the specimen was checked with a scintillometer. No radiation was detected. No fluorescence was observed with SW or LW UV. |

Species: CHALCOPYRITE Locality: Ham-Weeks Mine, Wakefield, NH Specimen Size: 9 cm specimen with tape label Field Collected: Unknown. Ex Gene Bearss collection Catalog No.: 1952 Notes: Label gives a date of 1990, likely when Gene acquired the specimen. The $2.00 price suggests to me that that Gene purchased the specimen, rather than self-collected it. A good voucher specimen for chalcopyrite at the Ham-weeks Mine. |

Species: FLUORITE Locality: Stoddard Mine, Westmoreland, NH Specimen Size: 13 cm specimen with pale green fluorite octahedrons to 2 cm Field Collected: Don Swenson Catalog No.: A Don Swenson specimen Notes: This is a most remarkable Stoddard Mine specimen. Without confirmation from long-time collecting friend Don Swenson, I would naturally think this piece was from the nearby Wise Mine, a locality long known for its world class green fluorite specimens. This fluorite has a pale blue fluorescence, more prominent with long wave UV. |

Species: MARCASITE Locality: Bradsher Quarry, Rt 11, Farmington, NH Specimen Size: 2 mm field of view Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2015 (authorized visit) Catalog No.: u1812 Notes: This is the most distinct, classic, example of New Hampshire marcasite crystals I have seen to date, Sept., 2015. These came from a small, 1 cm, weathered zone in milky quartz. It was the only marcasite occurence I found in three hours at the quarry. |

Species: SPHALERITE Locality: Mascot Mine, Gorham, NH Specimen Size: 3 cm vug with blue-green sphalerite Field Collected: Don Swenson - late 1980's Catalog No.: Secondary collection Notes: This blueish-green sphalerite is unusual for New Hampshire. Don had this analyzed by Harvard, approximately 1990 |

Species: STILPNOMELANE Locality: Moat Mtn., Hale's Location, NH Specimen Size: 4 cm specimen with miarolitic cavity of albite, quartz, and muscovite with brown micaeous coating of stilpnomelane. Field Collected: Don Swenson - 1993 Catalog No.: TBC Notes: Don saved this specimen for the 2.5 mm cluster of cassiterite crystals in the lower middle of the specimen. Small bertrandite crystals are also present. |
