Minerals of the Chickering Mine Walpole, NH ELBAITE Na(Al1.5,Li1.5)Al6(BO3)3[Si6O18](OH)4 Back to Chickering front page. | |
Specimen owner ID's (capitals): TM = Tom Mortimer, BW = Bob Wilken, BJ = Bob Janules, PC = Peter Cristofono, AW = Anna Wilken Photographer ID's (lower case). Identification: ELB_1 => EDS analysis. A grain from this specimen was analyzed for this plot. Note minimal Fe response. EDS detector has very poor Na response, fair Mg response, and very good Fe response. ELB_2 => EDS analysis. A grain from this specimen was analyzed for this plot. Kerry Day stated: "Good Elbiate Tourmaline pattern." ELB_3 => EDS analysis. A grain from this specimen was analyzed for this plot. Bart Cannon ID: "Elbaite/Dravite" This specimen is typical of the large blue tourmalines embedded in feldspar found at Chickering. EDS plot shows some Mg content and some Fe content. Based on these three elbaite plots, it appears that the blue hue increases with greater Fe content. ELB_4, ELB_5, ELB_6 => visual, based on above EDS plots. Discussion: [tm] Re. ELB_7, It would be interesting to do an EDS analysis of the green rind vs. the blue interior to see if the blue interior has a higher Fe content. ELB_7 has a green rind with a blue interior, while ELB_9 shows a blue rind with a green interior! |
